What is a pulse oximeter?

Pulse oximeter is a small medical device that measures heart rate and how much of the hemoglobin in blood is carrying oxygen (oxygen saturation). It is usually clisonosatd to fingers, but it can also attach to your nose, ear, toe or forehead. Pulse oximeters are commonly use because it is:

What do you mean by oxygen saturation?

Our bodies need oxygen to thrive. Oxygen enters our bodies through the lungs and gets absorbed into the bloodstream. Within the bloodstream, we have red blood cells that contains hemoglobin. Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein molecule that is responsible for transporting oxygen to various organs in our body.

Hemoglobin molecule without oxygen is called deoxygenated hemoglobin (deoxy Hb). Hemoglobin molecule with oxygen is called oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy Hb).

Oxygen saturation refers to the percentage of total hemoglobin that is carrying oxygen. When all Hb are carrying oxygen, the oxygen saturation is 100%.

How pulse oximeters measure blood saturation and heart rate?

Pulse oximeter measures blood saturation and heart rate by shining a light through the skin and detects the changes in light absorption in the oxygenated and deoxygenated Hb. This is a painless process.

Oxygenated Hb absorbs more infrared light than red light while deoxygenated Hb is the reverse. The pulse oximeter then compares the ratio of changes in red light vs infrared light absorbed and works out the oxygen saturation.

Each time your heart beats, it pushes blood through your body in a quick pulse. The pulse oximeter detects this movement and calculates heart rate in beats per minute (BPM).

What does the SpO2 readings mean?

Pulse Oximeters and Covid-19

Many patients with Covid-19 were reported to have dangerously low blood oxygen levels. However, many other diseases also display such symptoms, for instance, chronic lung diseases, asthma, sleep apnea and many other non Covid-19 lung infections. In such situations, doctors will monitor oxygen levels for such patients to determine if their conditions are worsening or improving.
